Capturing the candid, genuine moments of your family.
Family shoots should be about those fleeting moments in time that are so easy to forget, but that, when captured, are cherished forever. As a documentary-style photographer, I’m interested in the genuine, small moments that happen every day.
My Approach to Documentary-Style Family Photography
Think of this as the cure to those awkward family photos. During the photo shoot, I’m with you and your family as you go about your day, celebrate a birthday, or attend an outing of any kind, and document it as it happens.
I particularly love photographing children as they go about the serious business of being kids, and all that entails. Whether it’s a newborn just being introduced to the world, or a toddler doing their best to explore every corner of it, I’m all in.
My advice for parents when I show up to photograph their family is to relax and let the kids be kids. Sometimes, even though they want documentary photos, parents feel that they need to make sure their kid is “behaving” or smiling at the camera or sitting still. But trust me, those photos won’t carry the look or the energy that make documentary family photography special. I love talking to kids, finding out what their favorite toys are, or what they like to do, and then capturing the moments that flow out of our activity or conversation. Some kids are curious about my cameras, and so I’ll let them take a photo of their parents or siblings. Sometimes I bring bubble wands (only outdoors) and let them have at it. There’s no “right” way to go about it, and when the kids are enjoying themselves, it shows in each image.Honest Photos That Capture Your Authentic Family
Your family has its own unique energy, traditions, and way of connecting. Rather than posing perfection, my focus is on documenting your family as you are, preserving the laughter, connection, and small details that make your lives special.
The images below offer a glimpse into the families I've photographed throughout New York City, capturing real interactions and everyday moments that often become the most meaningful memories.

Frequently Asked Questions

A documentary-style family photographer captures real life as it unfolds rather than directing or staging moments. Instead of asking your children to smile at the camera or arranging every interaction, I observe and document the genuine connections, emotions, and everyday experiences that make your family unique. If you’re exploring a favorite neighborhood in New York City, spending time at home, or enjoying a day in Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park, my goal is to preserve your family's story and beautiful moments exactly as it happens.

The moments families treasure forever are often the ones they never planned for. A child's contagious laugh, a comforting hug, siblings playing together, or the quiet way your family connects during an ordinary afternoon can become some of your most meaningful photographs. Documentary-style family photography has a natural style that preserves these authentic moments, creating images that feel honest and personal.

Very little. As adocumentary-style New York City family photographer, my approach is centered on observation rather than instruction. Instead of directing your family into specific poses, I allow moments to develop naturally while documenting them as they happen. This creates photographs that feel relaxed, genuine, and true to who you are. My goal during your family photo shoot is for you and your children to spend your time together, not performing for the camera. The less attention you give to being photographed, the more authentic your images become.

The best way is to contact me here. After that, we can meet either via phone, video chat, or in person to discuss details. I require a $200 non-refundable deposit in order to hold the date. The remainder of the balance is due no later than 1 month prior to the photo shoot. If you are working with a shortened time frame (less than one month before the scheduled date), full payment is due upon booking.

This can vary, but typically it takes 4 to 6 weeks for me to edit your images and provide you with them. This timeframe allows me to dedicate the time your photos deserve to create a gallery of truly lasting memories. Once complete, you'll be sent a link to your online gallery.

I carefully review every image from your session and select the strongest photographs based on composition, emotion, storytelling, and variety. Whether your session includes a new baby, energetic toddlers, or multiple generations, my goal is always to deliver a gallery that feels complete and representative of your family. Many of my clients are surprised by which pictures become their favorite images, often choosing candid interactions over the ones they expected to love most. My incredible eye for detail helps me identify the photographs that feel both amazing and timeless while still reflecting the fun and personality of your family.
