What’s it cost?

How much does documentary wedding photography cost?

This is of course one of the first questions people often ask. And I get it, I do. Budgets are real, and few of us make plans without taking them into consideration. BUT…

It’s important to understand the ‘why’ of what I do before we talk about the price tag. I’m not so much a wedding photographer - in fact, in the traditional sense, I’m not a wedding photographer at all - but a photographer who is attending a wedding. Your wedding, perhaps, if you are a fan of genuine photos and care nothing for shot lists. The ‘why’ for me is very simple. My favorite photos are the ones I didn’t know were being taken. The ones that captured the belly laugh, the impromptu hug, the high five. When I’m at a wedding, I’m open to those types of moments, and to capturing as many as I can, because I know those will be your favorites too.

In short, if you don’t want to hire a “wedding photographer”, contact me!

Let’s talk about your day and your plans. Whatever your vision is for your wedding, I’d love to hear about it! (And we’ll talk about the investment, too.)

A few more thoughts …

What are you really paying for when you hire a documentary wedding photographer? Apart from bringing in someone whose style you love based on images you’ve seen (more about that below), you’re hiring the experience they bring to the moment. You are also paying for the work that happens after the wedding itself is over, which includes choosing the best images - no, they are not ALL going to be great, no matter what anyone says - editing the selected images to be as perfect as possible, and delivering them to you in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and easy to access.

First and foremost, I believe in honest, beautiful images.

Back to the part about the style you love

A photographer’s style is a reflection of their unique approach, their ‘eye’, and overall skill, both technical and emotional. What is emotional skill? It’s the ability to really see and capture those genuine, candid moments as they happen. You can bet that the great documentary photographers have been honing their skills for years. It doesn’t just happen. When you hire a photographer, you’re not just paying for the hours they will spend with you, but for all of the years of work they’ve created before you saw their photos, and the hours of work they’ll put in to the images from your wedding to make them as good as they can be. Think of it like hiring a Michelin chef as opposed to ordering from Pizza Hut. There’s nothing wrong with Pizza Hut, but Pizza Hut is the same all over the world, and a Michelin chef is one of a kind. There’s a reason their food isn’t priced the same.
